If you have been following the huge battle and debate over Initiative 594 in Washington State you know this carries potentially big implications for gun owners…everywhere.
This has been one of the hottest Initiatives on any ballot this election year…regardless of the state where you live, including our own. And there was big money behind it passing…in fact many billionaires in Washington State as well as around the country got behind it to contribute almost 10 to 1 in campaign funding to ensure it passed. It certainly worked out the way the proponents wanted and those opposing the initiative were a mere whimper compared to the roar of the money behind getting it to pass.
But that’s not the real issue here…that is the topic of discussion for another day. What is most pressing about this Initiative is how much this could potentially impact every gun owner in the state. While the Initiative still needs to be unraveled and the details figured out quickly (law is supposed to go into effect December 1, 2014) there are certain issues that are evident and clearly going to affect the average gun owner. There was a great article by Washington Arms Collectors called, “The Myths of Initiative 594” that might give you some insight into why this is such a huge Initiative. They listed out 26 myths that are worth the time to take to read.
But what is important here…for all of us and everyone else around the country…is how other states will jump on the passing of I-594 and want to rally their state around passing it as well. Precedence has now been set by a state so it makes it much easier for others to follow. Whether other states like ours will garner a group of billionaires to support it or not, you can rest assured that someone in our state will jump on this and want to get it on a ballot. We haven’t seen the last of I-594 and we will most certainly see it pop up in other states around the country.
Whether you are for or against the elements of an Initiative like this, the key is to fully understand what was really passed vs. what people thought was being passed. From all the press being put out in Washington State it is clear many believe voters had no clue what they were really approving. It was billed as an initiative to “tighten background checks” on people to avoid criminals and others easily obtaining firearms. But when you read more about what’s in it, you realize it is far more reaching and has far more impact on the average gun owner than most realize.
If you are interested in Gun Law, I would strongly encourage you to do some more reading on this Initiative so you can see what may very well be showing up sometime in our own state. As we get more information and stories about how this will impact gun owners, I will share it with you so we can all better understand what may very well be in our own future. If you have any questions or comments about the Washington State I-594, please share them with our readers, we can all learn from each other.
