A small tube of metal can land you in prison! It can also strip you of your gun rights, with fines that could eliminate your worldly wealth. Do you know how to avoid this from happening or even that it could happen to you? It all comes down to knowing the law and staying within it.
Certain firearms may only be possessed as long as they are properly registered. The ones I am talking about are called “National Firearms Act” or NFA firearms. We have all heard the term, but what does it really mean or include? There are quite a few of them out there which were purchased or acquired long ago. They could be ticking time-bombs for you and your loved ones if you don’t know what they are and how they should be treated. Let’s see if we can help clear this up and keep you out of jail and your assets intact!
There are six types of NFA firearms:
- Machine guns
- Silencers/sound suppressors (same thing)
- Short-barrel rifles
- Short-barrel shotguns
- Destructive devices
- AOWs – “any other weapons” – a pretty broad category
Possessing these without registration happens all the time, unfortunately. Then, you or a loved one might even also transfer them to someone else…illegally! In each case, this is a criminal act which subjects you (or others) to fines of up to $500,000 per count and 10 years in prison!
Know anybody with a “war souvenir”? I have met gun owners claiming to own machine guns or parts to make a legal rifle into a machine gun. They have explosives and a variety of things to make illegal firearms. Check with your state. This could be a crime, making it also a federal crime. If you aren’t aware of this, you could really be out on a limb.
Finally, even if these firearms are owned legally, does your spouse or roommate or anyone living with you who might come into contact with them even know what they are? Do they know the federal transfer requirements and the state law where you live, or where an heir might live? All of these are significant potential risks to ownership unless handled correctly.
A silencer could be the LOUDEST firearm somebody can own if they or a loved one lands in jail, stripped of all their guns, and financially devastated. Know what you have and take care of it so you can enjoy their benefits without all their risks.
